Apollo Caravan Ripoff

Apollo Caravan rental cheated me out of $560.00 for a rock chip smaller than my small fingernail. It could have been fixed for $60.00 but they charged extra so called administration fees. You have to put a deposit down when you rent and they will find something to nail you for. They will even charge you for sand glazing what ever that means. Be warned. I had mulitiple problems with the RV of which they would not pay for. Water line broke, flat tire, engine died, Spent most of the trip fixing the RV. Rent a car instead and stay at hotels or tent. Impossible!

I am sorry to say this company is an absolute joke. Their RV's are most likely some of the nicest ones out there and come with a lot of amenities, but all that does not help you anything if you cannot book one.

They tell you if you book early they will give you a 10% discount. So I tried to book early. "sorry, we are changing out our inventory every year and currently do not know when vehicles will be available". OK, so no discount.

They tell you they price match. I actually had a vehicle "on hold" and gave them all information requested to price match, then all of a sudden the vehicle was no longer available and they re-quoted me from a 31" foot RV down to the smallest unit they have, for 5 days instead of the 14 days I had planned on travelling.

I almost gave up. But i really liked the vehicles and amenities so I gave it another try: Since I am somewhat flexible with the time I wanted to travel I started looking at availability one week earlier then originally planned and they had vehicles available. So again I called, asking if they can please price match (after all a $36 difference per night) and they said they have all information they needed and would process the price match and contact me back once complete. I then received a revised email quote, reducing the price by $3 per night. When I called them back saying that this was not a price match, they asked me that they do not have anyone available to process the price matching and that I needed to try back Monday.

I asked if they could extend the "hold" until Monday so I would not lose the vehicle again and of course, this was not possible. So by now the hold has expired on the vehicle and they now have no more units available.

The local branches have literally no influence on any bookings and the main office in Brisbane, Australia is giving you a run around from ***.

Now I would be afraid even renting from them, because if the actual support is anything like the reservation process, my vacation would be doomed. I feel like there would be a good chance for me to show up to pick up the vehicle and them not having one available.

Again, nice units, great amenities and good pricing, IF you can get one. And please do not waste your time expecting any of the special offers they advertise. It'll cause your more heartache than anything.

Apollo Campervan steals your security bond

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
We paid a $5000 vehicle damage security bond via our HSBC credit card plus non a refundable administrative fee. The charge posted to my credit card account within 30 minutes! We used the van as planned for 4 weeks. The van was fine and functioned as expected. We returned the van, undamaged and were told that the bond would be refunded. It has not been refunded after more than a month. When I call the company, I found I had to work through a telephone answering maze and eventually get the choice for "problems with refunds". When you select this, there is a ring for a while, then a message that they are busy processing refunds, please leave a message. I have left messages over two weeks ago and no one has responded. It is well over a month now, and no refund has been posted. It is amazing that they have the staff to process charges immediately and yet no one to process refunds in a month. If you imagine every one of their vehicles having a $5000 or more bond, then it becomes clear they are financing the company with these bonds. Perhaps in reality this company is bankrupt?

Getting your bond back from Apollo Motorhomes, Cheapa, Hippie and Star RV

Apollo have different brands but they are all the same company. So beware of Cheapa Campa, Hippie Campervans and Star RV as well. They have a great little scam going - they keep your deposit (bond) as long as possible to earn the interest on it. With 4000 vehicles, and many of them with a $5000 bond, just do the sums and you will see why they are so reluctant to give you your bond back. We are talking millions of $ here that they are earning interest on every day - using your money! The best way to get your bond refunded is to contact your credit card company immediately and get them to handle it. As soon as Apollo hears from the credit card company they pay up. But if you are one of the nice customers who tries calling and emailing, they will stall you as long as possible. In fact, they simply ignore you. You could also go to the Office of Fair Trading in QLD, Australia, which is where the company is based. Make a complaint! Or else report them to the ACCC which is a federal agency in Australia that deals with consumer complaints. This company really needs to be avoided by anyone interested in hiring a campervan. The vans are shoddy, the company is badly run, and staff morale is low. Go elsewhere if you can.

No rental available

Rented RV in February 2014 to be picked up in Denver for 9 days starting at noon on June 6 2014. Did this online. Hubby kept getting emails reminding us about it. Well, we show up at appointed time to pick up said RV and tada.... NO MOTORHOME!!! What??? The Denver folks claimed they had no phone number to get ahold of us, ??why not email kids??? Long story short, they couldn't tell us why it wasn't there (others were waiting there in the same boat!!)...late, reservation messed up, whatever. They "might have an RV by tomorrow night at 5pm, or the next day". Well, we needed to be in NW Nebraska by 2 pm the next day for a week long organized bicycle ride and couldn't wait around. No explanation, no on answering the phone in Las Vegas.. took a week and a half after this fiasco to just get out deposit back from them and we haven't gotten any sort of explanation about the whole deal. They seem to be a very ill run operation...rent from these jokers at your own risk people. We were lucky, we went to "Plan B" and got it all together with our SUV with a box trailer and camping equipment..we felt sorry for the other folks waiting there who were apparently from out of town..

Apollo ripped me off for $560.00 AUD

I had a very small rock chip. Apollo took $560.00 off my deposit. $360.00 plus administration fees. Do not use Apollo or CheapaCampa. Rent car stay at motels. Credit card does not have insurance for RV. Camper had multiple problems that Apollo did not pay for. You cannot take the RV on dirt roads. They made me pay for linen. The only thing I had was kitchen utensils. This company will probably go out of business with the reputation that it has. Complaints after complaints. The camper was dirty and old. If you rent from them no matter what kind of deal you get you will get ripped off at the end.

Apollo - Greedy company with very bad campervans and no service

Our Overall-experience with Apollo/Cheapa Campa was more than disappointing. 1. When we picked up the campervan in Perth, it was not clean at all! Superficially it seemed ok, a closer look showed that neither the floor, nor the surfaces, nor the cupboards, nor the dishes, pans etc. were cleaned. It was all dirty and pretty disgusting. It really seemed like, their idea of "cleaning" was nothing more than spraying the whole van with air freshener. Unfortunately they even sprayed the fridge with this sweet smelling stuff, which resulted in a nasty smell in the fridge. That smell kept rubbing off on our food and didn't go away even after the fourth cleaning! 2. The bedding was dirty and smelled as if it hadn't been washed for ages. Not only the linen but mostly the pillow and duvet. For a rental price of 70 AUD for the bedding I expect it at least to be clean. 3. The battery, that serves the lights, fridge etc., was very old, low or badly serviced. Even after driving the whole day and when really trying to use as little energy as possible, the battery was low within 3 hours after stopping. When we didn't have a powered site, e.g. the fridge stopped working properly latest at 1 a.m.. It then kept trying to restart the cooling process, but didn't succeed, which resulted in constant noise and woke us up in the middle of the night. So, actually, we were forced to turn off the fridge in the evening before sleeping. Therefore we couldn't really use it. As for the water pump, which as well didn't work properly, when the battery was low. We had other (cheaper!) campervans before in NZ and Tasmania, but we never had any problems with the battery not sufficing at least one night! 4. Already after one week the brake sensor was defect and we had to spend time at a garage. One should think a vehicle gets checked between two rentals so that the customers won't be bothered spending holiday time with a defect van. Besides there was no instruction manual for the car or general vehicle data, which even surprised the guy at the garage. 5. All features, electrical or non-electrical, were outworn and badly (or never) serviced. We surely didn't expect a new and shiny vehicle, but a clean, good cared for one. We had other campervans of other companies in NZ and Tasmania. They weren't only cheaper, but first of all they were really good taken care of. When we picked up the van, we were told the van would be an upgrade. If this was already the upgrade, I surely don't want to know, what would have been the van we booked! 6. We booked the van for a total of 9 weeks, pick-up in Perth, drop-off in Cairns. After two weeks and bad weather we thought about changing the booking: We wanted to drop-off the van we had in Perth, then fly to Sydney, pick up another van and drive from Sydney to Cairns. The total rental time would have been the same. When calling the booking hotline they were absolutely not helpful! We were told, such a change in booking would result in immense costs, as exactly this van has to be in Cairns on July 1st. Come on, it's not as Apollo/Cheapa Campa has only this one van ... We then were told, that if we drop off the van in Perth, instead of Cairns, we would have to pay AUD 700 Administration fee plus the relocation costs of the vehicle from Perth to Cairns, our reservation and therefore the money paid would be forfeit and we would have to make a new booking for the way from Sydney to Cairns. This is plain ridiculous!!! We know, that the possibility to change the reservation is not given in the contract. But we booked 9 weeks, at least we could expect a bit of cooperation and real customer service from their part. A willingness to solve the problem together was inexistent. The reasons given by Apollos "Customer Service" were incomprehensible and far fetched. For sure they have a computer system to manage the bookings and it would have been three clicks to change the booking, if one would be willing and customer oriented. Instead all we got was prospect of getting squeezed of our money even more. 7. We had to pay a deposit of AUD 2,700.00. At the drop-off in Cairns we were told, that the refund of the deposit is authorized and the money would be back on our account within 2 weeks - which is already unusually late, given our experience with other rental companies. It took nearly 4 weeks and two complaints to finally get our deposit back. Three weeks after drop-off, we received an Email from Apollo, asking about our experiences. So we sent them all our complaints. Of course we didn't receive an answer, our complaints were just rudely ignored. The overall impression that we got out of our experience (and by reading their terms and conditions) is, that Apollo/Cheapa Campa is only focused on squeezing the most money possibly out of the customers without aiming on satisfying it's customers and by rendering the least service possible. We really regret renting the Campervan with Apollo and would NEVER recommend them to any other person.

A follow up to this as I am the hubby mentioned in the review! I have continued to try and reach anyone that might be able to explain what happened to no avail.

Their regional manager Susie Iott is either behind closed doors, with a client or not there. No response to e mails. The gal who answers the phone at the alas Vegas office recognizes me now.

What a joke company. If I ran my business this way there wouldn't be a business.

Unprofessional company

No stars at all, we had a really bad experience from the moment we picked up our camper and rode it from Hobart airport to cascade brewery were we had our tour, the engine then broke resulting in a leak in the transmission, we gave immediate notice (at 12:00pm) so that they could move fast to exchange our camper and could continue with our schedule. My husband was calling every 20 min to the people in Melbourne who answered the phone call and kept saying they were dealing with the situation. Situation that took us more than 4 hours waiting for them, at the end they sent a tow, and the driver took us to the VW Agency to see if the problem was minor and they can fix it at that moment which it was not. The agency then gave us another similar caravan they had just fixed and we exchange our luggage to that one, but it was really filthy and also we were not happy that that camper was not checked prior , so we contact the guy from Apollo Hobart airport to let him know the whole situation to what he responded "I was only made aware what had happened around 3:00 pm, So he said come back and I'll have another camper ready for you. When we arrived it was only too obvious that the guy rushed to get ready that camper, because it was wet from the outside, it was getting charged, and to make things worse it wasn't properly clean in the inside. By that time (5pm) my husband and I were really annoyed for the lost day, and for the unprofessional way Apollo handled the situation, because to start with we shouldn't have had to wait for the towing van and then be towed away to the VW agency, they should had made arrangements for us to exchange the camper right where we were and then do whatever they needed to fix the problem of the broken one without us being involved. The guy in the Hobart airport agency told us they would reimburse our money for the lost day. It's passed already a month and they haven't done it yet. We are still waiting to happen. So just another proof of the joke this company is, just showing is not a serious enterprise and as I mention at the beginning of this ZERO Professional. One thing we are sure, we won't make use of your services in the future, and make sure our friends and family know how we were treated by this company. Monica P.

Problems with Apollo RV motorhome rental

In the following report of our lease experiences with the Apollo VW Motorhome, rental period 21.12.2013 to 4.1.2014

1. Receiving of the VW motorhome on 21.12.2013, even the Apollo sales person (Michaela Mueller) noticed as we did that the motor home was very badly/incomplete/partly not at all cleaned inside: the floor in the main isle was dirty, the kitchen working plate, the side table, the shower cabinet floor, the refrigerator, the black water toilette cassette overrun was filled with dirty water. Emergency wise some re-cleaning was done, this way carry over from us of the motorhome.

2. After 5 km drive, stop at a gasoline station I noticed that the tire pressure of both tires rear axles left side seemed to be very low. I confirmed with an air pressure gauge that the pressure level was app. 30 – 35 PSI (60 PSI required). With this dangerous low tire air pressure the Apollo Company send us on the road. Missing was the 180 deg. steel tube extension of the outer tire valve, this way it took me 20 min to push the pressure hose in a bow form into the inner rim to get access to the valve of the outer tire. Means, Apollo technical could not check/correct the tire pressure as the extension was missing.

3. Some 10 km further on the road dirt water started to flow from the bottom of the shower cell into the middle isle. My wife formed a towel wall around the shower cell to avoid that stinky dirt water was running into the middle isle and under the beds.

4. On 22.12.2013, beach day, vehicle was not moved, no further problems appeared.

5. In the night from 22.12.2013 to 23.12.2013 outside temperatures of < 5 C, inside < 8 C, switching on the AC to use reversed at heat pump failed, no hot air coming out, after some minutes compressor switched off with failure code E4 (later identified as low gas/Frigen level).

6. On the 24th of December pass road in the Grampian mountains, manual shift back to lower gear on a steep grade cause failure code in the dash board, power reduction by app. 50 % (engine protection function), vehicle stopped completely, vehicles behind had to break full to avoid accident. I stopped the engine and restarted it to reset the engine ECU. Failure was reset, in “A” position than automatic transmission was working “normal” (I noticed rather abnormal sliding gear shift). Later in the afternoon on the same day inside temperatures of 35 C, switching on AC to cool down the inner motorhome caused same failure E4, AC completely w/o any function. Tel. call to Apollo directly after this incident, answer was no help possible because of Christmas holidays, but we should buy a mobile AC at Coles in the city of Horsham on next morning. We stopped at Coles next morning, shop was of course closed, Apollo information wrong. The Lady promised to call us back for further solutions – never took place. W/o any alternative we went on in our travel schedule w/o any AC.

7. On 25.12.2013 again complaints to Apollo to find a repair/change solution as we can’t go as planned into the outback w/o AC. Apollo staff promised to call me back – never took place.

8. On 26.12.2013 driving to Adelaide which was not planned originally, just to present the vehicle to an Apollo service station and force the Apollo staff to find a repair/vehicle exchange possibility. Friendly staff exchanged black water toilette cassette, found the rubber sealing was worn out, root cause for “*** water” flow into the inner motorhome. They promised to organize AC repair on next morning.

9. Second unplanned night in Adelaide to go to Apollo on 27.12.2013 again. Now the truth from the Apollo staff, all AC repair shops are closed until January, we would have to life with the motorhome “as is”, no replacement vehicle available in the next 3 days. On base of this information our decision to go on in our travel plan not to spoil our Australia “vacation” completely.

10. On 28.12.2013 app. 7 times gear box shift failures from 5th to 6th gear, 50% power reduction, vehicle stop, engine restart/ECU reset, etc etc etc…….

11. Later on 28.12.2013 new permanent failure code, exhaust system failure, most likely DPF w/o regeneration active or passive, back pressure too high.

12. Later on 28.12.2013 CD player failed, CD is not coming out any more.

13. On 29.12.2013 arrival at Ayers Rock, after visiting the visitor center transmission blocked in first gear, engine start denied from engine ECU, no way to get the first gear out, to start the engine or to move the vehicle.

14. Emergency pick up from shuttle service (outside temperature 44 C!!) to bring us back to the resort, check in into the Desert Gardens Hotel, than again complaints to Apollo about all the problems and the current situation. Answer from Apollo they would send a VW mechanic next day, repair of AC not possible, no replacement vehicle available. I told the lady in charge from Apollo that we are in a desert location and that the next VW service would be in Alice Springs, 470 km away, but the staff ignored my comment.

15. Next morning 30.12.2013 the local mechanic Tony to whom I already explained our problem the day before showed up (not a VW service car) and took me to our stranded motor home. For half an hour he hit the electric actuator motor for the gear shift from the top and the ground with a wooden plank, than the actuator motor started to move into “N” and we could start the vehicle engine. I drove the VW motorhome back to the resort but I noticed very “hard and abnormal” shifting. I explained to Apollo in the next call that I am not willing in this desert and killing ambient temperatures to risk going again on the road with this vehicle (my opinion confirmed by Tony). The staff from Apollo denied my demand for a replacement vehicle and told me she would try to find another solution, offered me a “rental car” instead of a motor home even so rental cars are in Ayers Rock not available in this moment. I denied all these proposals, spoke to her manager Mr. Leigh and explained that I am insisting in a replacement vehicle.

16. After several useless calls/ proposals (driving with a towing vehicle to Alice Springs etc) then finally information that Apollo would book a flight for us from Ayers Rock to Melbourne on 31.12.2013 and that we could pick up a 6 berth replacement vehicle in the afternoon of 31.12.2013 in Melbourne Apollo station.

17. Later on 30.12.2013 we had to throw away all food/meat/drinks/additional bought camping equipment etc because we could not carry with us on our unplanned flight to Melbourne (worth > 150 Dollar).

18. On 31.12.2013 we arrived at Apollo station at 16.30 PM to receive our replacement vehicle. But, according to the records in the Apollo customer tracking system we should have picked up this vehicle in Adelaide. Never the less Michaela Mueller could provide to us the same VW 6 berth vehicle, just a bit newer with only 57000 km (the first vehicle had 145000 km). This time I checked all important functions by myself. We drove with the vehicle in direction to Sydney, found out in the first Camping stop in Benalla some problems in this second vehicle as well:

• that the grey water hose was trapped. I had to flush it with the pressurized clean water hose.

• the flange connector bracket of the grey water hose under the vehicle chassis was loose

• the grey water hose under the vehicle was loose

• the right side rubber sealing of the front wind shield came out and made horrible noise when driving in strong side winds (we pushed it back several times but it came out again).

• the support bars of the sun roof can't get out easily, the rear one only by almost breaking it. The bolt from the main folding arms connection on the outer sun roof cover hits the support bars

• head light right side broken

• rear bumper bended on the left side, tail light directed to the road, not safety compliant

Conclusions as follows:

• The first vehicle was hardly cleaned and not checked at all before delivery to the customer, the AC was w/o function from the beginning on, tire pressure partly dangerous low, autom. transmission with failure codes all the time, manual shifting not working at all, the black water toilette cassette with a leakage. All these functional severe failures could have been found if the vehicle would have been checked before delivery to the customer.

• Our vacation are completely spoiled as we basically were confronted on daily base with new problems and search activities to find a repair shop for the none functional AC. 5 days out of our 14 day vacation we spend exclusively just for searching AC repair, Apollo service station or replacement vehicle.

• Up to the total vehicle failure at Ayers Rock no help from Apollo was coming at all, I never was called back. Visible that main concern/focus of Apollo staff is to spend less than possible money for customer complaints/vehicle failures but not customer satisfaction. Apollo wanted us first to force to go from Ayers Rock to Alice Spring in a tow truck from VW just to avoid the transportation costs for us (vehicle is still under VW mobility warranty). We could have had this flight to Melbourne on 29.12.2013 not to spoil our vacation completely but this was denied, we lost 2,5 more days with doing/seeing nothing. At least, at the very end and after our vacation already were spoiled Apollo accepted to pay for the hotel, the flight and give us a replacement vehicle. Why not doing so right at the beginning of our “nightmare”?

Sensible people stay in hotels with good ratings.

You chose to rent a "mobile home." An RV. A foolish choice to begin with.

Try a Holiday Inn next time.

Ridiculous fee's, poor quality vehicles

I would never use apollo again. Took us four vans in one week to get one close to right. Leaking toilets on the first two and no hot water on number three. If you take out the basic insurance they take $5000 of your credit card as bond. Then takes 15 business days to get it back at the end of the hire. Plus they tried to send me a fine for using citilink when I had a day pass. ...Plus a $75 administration fee. Talk a rip off. While their customer service team was great and very helpful the maintenance team are pathetic and the people who set the rates and fees are close enough being criminal.

Overcharged for rockchip

Apollo motorhomes deducted $520.00 off my deposit for a rock chip that could have easily been fixed for $60.00. They also did not reimburse me for parts that I bought for repairs that I did myself. CheapCampa by Apollo motorhomes had multiple breakdowns bad valve stems on tires that lost air. Campervan was dirty and they even charged me for linen. Your Visa / Mastercard does not have CDW for RVs. Rent a car from Hertz/ Budget and get a motel. It is alot safer. Some companies show alot of problems with insolvency. I would really be careful with this company.

The worst experience in 30 countries: thanks Apollo

I,m going to explain my "wonderful" experience with this "wonderful" enterprise: First of all, the deposit for the campervan is not just a deposit, but also a TRANSACTION, so, your money disappears from your credit card and you also pay the comission! (54 $ more). We rented a camper with them in Alice Springs, the windscreen had some stone chips, but it,s usual, it was not the first time we rented a car with stone chips. But the screen broke while we were travelling to Cairns, and when we arrived to the office, they wanted us to pay the windscreen. We tried to say them all the time the windscreen was broken in Alice, and they never wanted to listen, never wanted to solve it, they had or money and they thought they could do what the wanted to. After that they began to shout us.. but the worst came later when they threw our luggage to the road and push us like if we were dogs. Next day we leaved Cairns and went to New Zealand. In this country, Apollo sent us a mail saying we had to pay 550 $ for the windscreen... and also 272,5 $ for the demurrage!! I asked them what demurrage, and they said that it was so and besides they were very good because they could have made me pay even more!!!!! And of course, my claim was closed and that was all. As you can see, they are very reasonable people. Even though, they had to refund us a lot of money from the deposit (more than 2.000 $!), they always said they refund it between 2 and 3 weeks from the drop off.. but we wait one and another day.. and the money didn,t return to us. We couldn,t really enjoy in NZ because we were really afraid, it was a lot of money. So we arrived home, and I sent a mail to our consul, who said me to contact the Fair Trading Office in Brisbane. I did so and they helped me to recover our deposit (two months later!!, this is not a demurrage??), but not the money for the windscreen and for the "demurrage". I suppose I will never recover it, but if I help some people not to ruin their holidays, I would be really very happy. Don,t be imprudent, DO NOT RENT WITH APOLLO CAMPER! And if you have had a problem with them, contact the Fair Trading Office (is possible by mail), they will help you and also is good for them to know this sort of cases.

6 lost days with Apollo RV

Hi, we started last Saturday with our Apollo RV. The guy there told us that there is no problem with the slide out although there was a big gab. Just 10 miles outside of Las Vegas the gap was doubled and the aerodynamic noise was unbearable. There was a big gap at the slide out just behind the driver. So we stopped every 20 miles to push it in. On Monday we phoned with Apollo. There was a lady in Las Vegas which was not familiar with the phone. The other hot line was not able to offer a solution. The day after we had to visit a repair shop in Lake Havasu. A 5 minute look gave the result: impossible to fix. The only solution was to drive back to Las Vegas for hours to replace the car. "If your are not there till 4 pm, you will not get a replacement." Thats tough and unfriendly. Now we spend a whole day to get an new RV, emptying and filling the other at more than 120 *F / 45 *C. We not even got a bottle of fresh water. Still the story continues. In the new RV the water is redish and the sink if filled with foam, if the try to fill it. Experts told me that it is some additive that the water does not freeze in August in Las Vegas. Sorry, so we hat to replace all the water in the tank and to spill it a few times. This is not very professional from Apollo. Two days later on Friday somebody asks us to watch the rear right tires. Both are totally empty. I asked to lady of Apollo for a solution at 2 pm. At 4 pm were told to wait for the service. At 6 pm the hotline in Australia told is that they can not solve the problem. We should not move from the intersection, where we stopped and to wait till next morning, Saturday. Sorry again, this is not a service. No reaction in the working hours and the emergency service in Australia tells us not be be upset. Summary: We spend the first week to solve the problems with the RV. Actually we except some holidays.
